Full Report:

In a recent CNN poll, former President Donald Trump has emerged with a six-point lead over President Joe Biden. This poll, one of the first conducted post-debate, shows Trump with 49% support compared to Biden's 43%. This trend echoes earlier findings from CBS News and USA Today, indicating growing concerns among Democrats about Biden's viability as their candidate for November.

According to the poll, Trump maintains his lead not only over Biden but also against all other potential Democratic candidates should Biden decide to step down. A significant 72% of registered voters and 45% of Democrats express a desire for a different candidate. Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be the strongest alternative, yet she still trails Trump by three points:

  • Trump 49%, Biden 43%

  • Trump 47%, Harris 45%

  • Trump 48%, Newsom 43%

  • Trump 47%, Buttigieg 43%

  • Trump 47%, Whitmer 42%

Political analysts highlight three main challenges for Democrats if they were to replace Biden: getting a new candidate on ballots in all 50 states, redirecting campaign funds, and finding a candidate willing to potentially sacrifice their political future.

A significant portion of Democrats lack confidence in Biden's re-election chances. The poll reveals that 56% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters believe the party would have a better shot with someone other than Biden, while only 43% think Biden remains their best option. These numbers have not improved since Biden secured the nomination, showing a persistent lack of confidence within his party.

Biden's overall approval ratings have plummeted to new lows. The poll indicates that only 36% of Americans approve of his performance, with a striking 45% expressing strong disapproval. Furthermore, his favorability rating stands at a mere 34%, with 58% viewing him unfavorably. In comparison, potential Democratic replacements like Harris, Buttigieg, Newsom, and Whitmer are less known but also face unfavorable ratings among those who recognize them.

The CNN poll surveyed 1,274 Americans between June 28-30 and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points. Despite these troubling numbers, Biden remains committed to staying in the race, citing internal polling as evidence of his electability.

Additionally, a CBS News/YouGov poll found that 72% of registered voters doubt Biden's mental and cognitive health, an increase of seven points since the debate. This growing skepticism adds to the mounting challenges Biden faces as he seeks re-election.
