In DNC Warm-Up over 100 Shot Over Weekend in Chicago

Chicago's July 4th weekend turned deadly as gun violence surged, with over 100 people shot and 17 killed, despite stringent gun control measures in place.

During the July 4th weekend in Chicago, at least 100 people were shot, with 17 fatalities, marking a significant surge in gun violence under Mayor Brandon Johnson’s (D) administration.

From Wednesday night to Friday night alone, 58 people were shot, with 11 succumbing to their injuries. By Sunday morning, the count had increased to 87 victims, including 16 deaths.

The violence prompted a local resident to dub July 4th as “assassination day,” as reported by ABC 7/Chicago Sun-Times. By Monday morning, CNN confirmed the total had risen to at least 100 people shot, with 17 fatalities. This year’s July 4th weekend shootings represent a 27% increase over the previous year.

For comparison, the Chicago Sun-Times noted that during the 2023 July 4th weekend, 73 people were shot, with 11 fatalities. The holiday weekend spanned four days in both 2023 and 2024, as well as in 2019, when 68 people were shot, resulting in five deaths.

Despite Illinois having strict gun control measures—including a 72-hour waiting period on gun purchases, a red flag law, an assault weapons ban, a high-capacity magazine ban, and a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card requirement involving a thorough background check by the Illinois State Police—the violence persisted. Cook County, which encompasses Chicago, also enforces its own assault weapons and high-capacity magazine bans. Nonetheless, the July 4th weekend in Chicago saw at least 100 people shot.
