Elon Musk, shifting gears from neutrality, is set to donate $200 million to a super PAC supporting Donald Trump, marking a significant endorsement after the former president survived an assassination attempt.
Elon Musk, fresh off his endorsement of Donald Trump following an assassination attempt on the Republican candidate, is reportedly planning to donate around $200 million to a super PAC supporting the former president.
According to The Wall Street Journal, America PAC was formed last month with financial backing from Musk's friends, including Palantir Technologies co-founder Joe Lonsdale, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, and former U.S. ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft and her husband, Joe Craft, CEO of Alliance Resource Partners. The group has already spent at least $6.6 million on Trump's behalf, who was nominated at the Republican National Convention on Monday.
America PAC aims to register voters and encourage swing state residents to vote early and request mail-in ballots, countering Democrats' "get out the vote" campaigns and on-the-ground efforts leading up to the November election.
Musk, currently the world's richest person with an estimated fortune of over $250 billion, plans to donate $45 million each month to the super PAC until the election. This would make his contributions the largest known donations of the 2024 election cycle, surpassing the $50 million donated by the great-grandson of banker Thomas Mellon to a pro-Trump super PAC.
A recent filing revealed that America PAC had $8.75 million in contributions for the three-month period ending June 30, and Musk is expected to start his donations this month. Bloomberg News reported that Musk made an initial donation to the super PAC last week, though the amount is unknown.
Despite stating in March that he would not donate to either the Trump or Biden campaigns, the SpaceX and Tesla CEO has now thrown his full support behind Trump, endorsing him following the assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.
"I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery," Musk wrote on X, adding, "Last time America had a candidate this tough was Theodore Roosevelt."
