What could President Joe Biden’s exit from the 2024 White House race look like? According to an NBC News report on Friday, members of the 80-year-old president’s own family are actively considering this question.

Citing two people familiar with the discussions, the report suggests that one key consideration is maintaining Biden's reputation while avoiding giving former President Donald Trump any political advantage. The outlet notes:

“Biden’s family members have specifically discussed how he would want to end his re-election bid on his own terms, with a carefully calculated plan in place.”

Concerns about the impact of the campaign on Biden's health, his family, and the country's stability are central to these discussions, according to the sources.

The mere possibility of Biden's departure, coupled with his family’s preparations for a potential exit strategy, is a significant development, especially after Biden’s repeated assertions that he would not relinquish his position as the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party.

However, the White House has been quick to dismiss such speculation.

Spokesman Andrew Bates categorically denied that any exit discussions are taking place within the family or the broader Democratic party.

“That is not happening, period,” Bates stated. “The individuals making those claims are not speaking for his family or his team — and they will be proven wrong. Keep the faith.”

Biden’s reelection campaign chair, Jen O’Malley Dillon, also affirmed on Friday that the president remains committed to the race.

“Absolutely, the president’s in this race,” O’Malley Dillon said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” emphasizing that Biden “is more committed than ever to beat Donald Trump.”

“We believe on this campaign, we are built for the close election we are in, and we see the path forward,” she added, despite Biden currently being in isolation due to COVID-19, with no word yet on his return to the campaign trail.

“He’s the best person to take on Donald Trump.”
