The Democratic Socialists of America celebrated Vice President Kamala Harris’s choice of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her 2024 running mate, hailing it as a victory for the left's growing influence within the Democratic Party.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the largest socialist organization in the U.S., applauded Vice President Kamala Harris’s decision to select Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 presidential election, asserting that it signals the growing influence of the left.
“Harris choosing Walz as a running mate has shown the world that DSA and our allies on the left are a force that cannot be ignored,” the DSA proclaimed on X.
The DSA celebrated this choice as a victory for their collective efforts, stating that through organized action, they and the broader left have pushed for significant change. The organization highlighted its role in realigning the labor movement to support Palestinian liberation, linking this activism to Walz’s selection.
Initially, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro was considered the frontrunner for the vice-presidential spot. However, his candidacy faced resistance from progressives due to his support for Israel, making Walz’s selection a more palatable option for the left.
The DSA, known for supporting far-left figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has been vocal in its opposition to Israel’s military actions against Hamas, particularly following the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas that killed approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel, including women, children, and the elderly.
In their statement, the DSA credited the “Uncommitted movement,” a progressive initiative aimed at pressuring President Joe Biden to withdraw support for Israel, for influencing the vice-presidential pick. The movement, with significant involvement from DSA members, sought to prevent the selection of a candidate with ties to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and who would strongly support Israel in the ongoing conflict.
The DSA concluded its message with demands for Harris to advocate for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and impose an arms embargo on Israel, emphasizing their commitment to ending what they describe as genocide and ensuring freedom for all.
