House Speaker Mike Johnson is calling for unity and a reduction in heated political rhetoric following the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during his Pennsylvania rally on July 13.
In a recent NBC News interview, Speaker Johnson emphasized the need for all political leaders to lower the rhetorical temperature in the country. “We’ve got to turn the rhetoric down. We’ve got to turn the temperature down in this country,” Johnson stated. “We need leaders of all parties, on both sides, to call that out and make sure that happens so that we can go forward and maintain our free society that we all are blessed to have.”
Highlighting the intense scrutiny and criticism Trump has faced, Johnson compared it to the vilification of historical figures, stating, “There’s no figure in American history, at least in the modern era, maybe since Lincoln, who’s been so vilified and really persecuted by the media, Hollywood elites, political figures, and even the legal system."
Johnson also linked the heated political environment to the messages being spread about Trump’s presidency being a threat to democracy. “When the message goes out constantly that the election of Donald Trump would be a threat to democracy, that the republic would end, it heats up the environment. We cannot do that,” he asserted.
In light of the assassination attempt, Johnson has spoken with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and announced that Congress will thoroughly investigate any security lapses. Johnson called Trump’s survival a “miracle,” expressing his belief that divine intervention spared the former president’s life. “I believe that God spared him, and that bullet went just apparently a millimeter from doing real and permanent damage to him or perhaps taking his life. And it’s just kind of a surreal thing,” Johnson said.
Trump, who was injured in the incident, expressed his gratitude and faith in a Truth Social post, stating, “We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness.”
Tragically, 50-year-old volunteer firefighter Corey Comperatore lost his life in the attack, and two others, David Dutch and James Copenhaver, were injured. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, is under investigation by the FBI, which has not yet determined a motive but has not ruled out domestic terrorism.
Despite claims of inadequate security measures, the Secret Service has denied that any additional security resources were requested and denied. President Biden has also condemned the violence, urging for a cooler political climate. “There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence ever. Period. No exceptions,” Biden said in an Oval Office address.
